Hi,
I have a film making its world premiere at the Mill Valley Film Festival. It's called "Compound Eye" and it centers around an East Bay cartoonist who draws a controversial comic strip depicting the World Trade Center rebuilt as an IHOP with two stacks of pancakes rising high into the sky, and how it affects his roommate who is trying to quietly run a pirate radio station out of his basement. The movie stars Fausto Caceres (from the radio show, Shirley and Spinoza) and Jesse Reklaw (the cartoon, "Slow Wave"), and uses their real lives and weaves them into a fictional story.

Go to www.compoundeyemovie.com for info and a trailer.

The screenings are:
Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5:30pm at the CineArts@Sequoia theater in Mill Valley
Sat. Oct. 13 at 2:45pm at the Rafael Film Center in San Rafael.
We are looking for several graphic artists and writers to join us in collaborating comic strip projects that we are launching soon. We wish to create several series and publish them on our website come4play.com.

In our universe, our heroes and heroines fight for all persuasions, Gay, Straight, Lesbian, Bi-Sexual, and Transgender. Therefore, we obviously want our heroes and or heroines to also represent the diversity of human sexuality.

Since the site is age restricted, contributing graphic artists and writers will have almost complete artistic freedom to express this hot and sexy battle between good and evil.

Writers and graphic artists should be prepared with a pilot strip. Your Pilot Strip submission should come complete a title for your series, synopsis of the character, complete with description(s) that include details about who they are as a super hero and how they live in their secret identity, as well as what cause(s) they fight for and whom the fight against.
Stay tuned for more information and details regarding these projects.

A possible reason why some say success equals failure if you don't conform

In this so-called "society", many people believe that the primary purpose of the individual is to conform to some standard "normal" way of being. Because of that, many people believe that not conforming to the standard "normal" way of being constitutes failure. For example, consider my recent web comic success. I mentioned this success on a comics-themed message board a few weeks ago. Most of the responses I got there were statements that claimed I'm still a failure or will fail or haven't provided any evidence of success. This may be my opionion, but I suspect that these people are saying I'm a failure as a web comic artist because the theme of my web comic does not conform to the standard "normal" way of being. And what theme is that? The theme is LONG TOENAILS ON WOMEN! (Yeah! Really, man!)

Yes, the notion of long-toenailed women is not popular in most comic strip areas. But it is very popular in the area of long nail fetish web sites. Thus, my new web comic is featured on a LONG NAIL FETISH WEB SITE. THAT'S why I say my web comic is a success! Especailly since it probably gets more views than all my other web site endeavors combined.

I'm of the mind that creativity is mainly about changing the world. It has little if anything to do with the standard "normal" way of being. Any and all changes to the world go against the standard "normal" way of being. Consider this outragous statement that may have been made some 50 years ago:

"Rosa Parks, your protesting of the segragation laws contradicts the standard 'normal' way of being. Therefore, you're a was a failure."

Needeless to say, the same people who say I'm a failure because I won't do my comics in the standard "normal" way of being won't say that Rosa Parks was a failure for also going against the standard "normal" way of being.

"But that was years ago. Segreation is no longer part of the standard 'normal' way of being."

That proves my point exactly. The world won't stay the way it is forever. It's possible (no guarantee, of course) that long nail fetish comics may become more popular in the future.

"But now you're saying that the standard 'normal' way of being will be a good thing if your ideas become popular."

No. I'm just saying that change is one of the few constants of life. And the standard "normal" way of being is only wrong in my view if it's being forced on people when they have a right not to take part in it. I mean, there is no law that says that all web comics should conform to the standard "normal" way of being. People have the right to do comics -- web or otherwise -- any way they want, be it the standard "normal" way of being or otherwise. Success, basically, is whatever you want it to be. And in my case, success is expressing new ideas to a sizable audience. With my latest web comic, that's exactly what I got. I'm a successful web comic artist whether you don't like it or do. Yeah, baby!
I am going to make an eBook, to sell from my site (most likely for $24-29), and wanted to give those of you here and a few other tribes the heads up on it. It will detail what I did, in what order, the exact sources/programs/tools I use, etc. Basically I want to create a detailed step-by-step map as to how I got to this point.

I'm a new comic artist and am interested in going to APE this year. I am unpublished as of right now, but was considering attempting to get some self-publishing done for the event. Have any of you attempted this? Do you know any good printing companies that might be able to produce a small amount of material at a reasonable price?

Kinda curious if this kind of "homemade"stuff is welcome there or if a more sleek and polished approach is expected.

I'd appreciate any input you all have to offer.

All I need to do now is finish the hand-drawn art, revise the script some more and finish up the computer art. Since I have a slow computer, the computer aspect of the project may slow me down. However, I did get what seems to be a faster-working 3-D program from a friend of mine. If I use that system, then the Superfuture will very likely be completed ahead of schedule. All I need to do in that regard is solve the format problem and then I'll be set. More Superfuture details coming soon.

After hearing all the hoopla about Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow and its 100 percent computer-generated scenery, I've decided to do a mostly computer-generated comic of my own. But since I didn't want to go through the trouble of thinking up an all-new idea for the comic, I decided to look at some old comic book ideas I had lying around. In so doing, I found the perfect idea for this mostly computer generated-comic project: Adventures in the Superfuture!

Adventures in the Superfuture! takes place 1,000 years in the future and beyond -- an era that I define as the superfuture. The story will deal with intergalactic mercenaries, terraforming scientists and an "astrophyisical" women's prison among other things. I could go into more details on the project, but I'm still working on it. And if things go ideally, I could have Adventures in the Superfuture! done sometime in November.

i've done this in the past to only get messages from people who couldn't deliver at all and have no understanding of the business in the least, but for one reason or another I feel inclined to do so again.

I'm looking for an artist, inker and letterer. Yes everyone online is looking for an artist inker and letterer, because everyone claims they have this amazing comic book idea and don't actually understand the work that needs to go into something like that for it to be created.

I'm an artist and I'm just now doing inking and lettering and I think it's safe for me to say I understand the work involved in the creation of a comic (hell i'm working on one write now for class)

The comic i'm working on right now I would love to see published and I really do believe it would get published. I know this will come off as arrogant but i'm just being honest, it's well written the character's have depth are well designed and it's a superhero genre (almost a spoof) so this isn't exactly a title that would be hard to sell to a company. The catch is, I don't have the time. I'm still in school, and even if i rushed my drawings I wouldn't be able to make deadlines with inking and lettering coming into play.

I'm not going to bs anyone, I haven't been published, I'm no proffesional. However, I'm a good writer and a descent artist. I can provide thumbs with my scripts to make things clearer to the artist and inker, so there won't be as much confusion.

I would love to tell everyone I'll be willing to pay them but I won't be willing to put money on the line for a submission. Yes, it's nice to get payed, I understand how much work is involved in creating the actual comic and understand very well that few people would be inclined to do so much work without receiving some form of compensation. All I can say is, why not take a chance? What's the worse that could happen? Even if the submission is rejected you still have work to put into your portfolio to show to companies and the best type of work at that considering companies want to see artists who can actually make comics and not just pin ups, not to mention you can't put a price on experience, very few things are more valuable than that.

I think this message has drag on for long enough. All I'll say in closing is i'm serious about making comics. I want to break into the industry just as badly as most of you out there and I'll do everything I can to get this comic published. Just please DON'T I repeat DON'T message me if you're not serious. If I get messaged by one more flakey artist I think i'll pull my hair out.

The following is what i'm looking for:

~Artists~

An artist who understand SEQUENTIAL ART, someone who knows how to visually tell a story. If the art needs a script for the reader to have even an idea of what's going on then the art is lacking. If you can only draw character from the shoulder up then i'm not interested.

~Inkers~

Art is only as good as its inks. I'm looking for an inker who understands how to create depth and value with ink. I don't want a tracer, if you can only outline then it really serves no purpose.

~Letterer~

This is really the only one I don't have a good understanding of; from my understanding the letterer provides the letters and the panel borders. This is common sense but, if you're unable to do this then it's pretty obvious you shouldn't bother messaging me. I'd honestly prefer an inker who can letter, but if I can't find one than a letterer would be fine.

If you'd like to contact me outside of tribes my email address is

Vedgesan@hotmail.com

I'd actually prefer an email but a message would be fine as well.

Thank you for your time

I thought this place would be great to come and discuss our favorite web comics, get others interested in new ones, talk about our own, or just plain converse about anything!
My 2 favorite web comics are Penny Arcade and PVP, whats everyone elses?

What did everyone thing of Fridays Penny Arcade? Is Tycho right about Gamespy?
Has Scott Kurtz lost perspective of PVP? Or is it better than ever?
Does anyone esle think Mac Hall should update more frequently?
